Brytyjska demokracja jest jak skała. Sentymenty monarchiczne i dworskie theatrum, któremu z upodobaniem oddają się Brytyjczycy, żadną miarą jej nie zagrażają. Republikańskie narody Europy i świata mogą im tylko pozazdrościć tej uroczej zabawy w stylu vintage. Polacy też chcieliby mieć piękną księżniczkę i dzielnego księcia. Ale nie mają. Muszą wypożyczać z zagranicy. Z braku własnych rozrzewniają się nad książętami Cambridge.

Nieszkodliwa zabawa? Może i nieszkodliwa, ale dziś, gdy w naszym kraju w dramatycznym tempie niszczone są podstawy demokratycznego państwa prawa, ta nieszkodliwa zabawa zamienia się w żenujący spektakl. Pomiędzy jedną a drugą wykwintną kolacyjką brytyjskiej pary książęcej, zjedzoną w towarzystwie partyjnych notabli Kaczyńskiego, upadnie Sąd Najwyższy, a trójpodział władzy zostanie definitywnie pogrzebany. Czyżby z błogosławieństwem Wielkiej Brytanii? Smacznego!

Nie wiem, czy Kate i William są politykami. W każdym razie są dyplomatami, służącymi swemu rządowi. Jednakże poza tym są też wolnymi, dorosłymi ludźmi, decydującymi o tym, kiedy i dokąd pojadą, biorącymi odpowiedzialność za swoje postępowanie. Czy wiedzieli, dokąd się udają i co się dzieje w kraju, który polecono im odwiedzić tym razem? Zapewne wpisano im Polskę do kalendarza już dawno temu, w jakimś promocyjnym objeździe, służącym „ocieplaniu wizerunku” Wielkiej Brytanii w środku brexitowego kryzysu. Jednakże od tego Kate i William mają swoje książęce rozumy, by zastanowić się nad wymową i politycznymi skutkami swojej peregrynacji do grobu Solidarności.

Ciekawe, czy doszło do nich, że rząd, od którego odbierają dziś hołdy, uważa Lecha Wałęsę za „ruskiego agenta”? Pewnie doszło – w końcu po coś mają tę ambasadę w Warszawie i tych swoich speców od politycznego PR.

Nie da się usprawiedliwić tej wysoce niestosownej wizyty kalendarzem ani regułami dyplomacji. Sytuacja w Polsce jest nadzwyczajna, i to nie od dziś. Prestiżowe prezenty dla antydemokratycznego reżimu w Warszawie są dowodem lekceważenia Polski jako pretendenta do rodziny demokratycznych krajów Zachodu. Zostaliśmy potraktowani jak każdy inny kraj spoza tej rodziny, którego antydemokratyczne, autorytarne praktyki rządzenia uważa się za tyleż niezmienny, co obojętny fakt. Cóż, Poland is far away, nie trzeba się nią zbytnio przejmować.

Po co tu jesteście? Co chcecie nam powiedzieć? Że występowanie z Unii jest cool? Czy nie wiecie, że panujący w Polsce reżim odrąbuje nas siekierą od Europy, prowadząc do izolacji i politycznego osamotnienia naszego kraju? Dla Was Polska to tylko jeden z wielu odległych, obojętnych Wam krajów, do których Was posyłają. Dla nas to ojczyzna, która niedawno odzyskała wolność, a teraz ta wolność na naszych oczach deptana jest trzewikami reakcyjnych populistów i nacjonalistów. Para książęca, a wraz z nią rząd Wielkiej Brytanii, tą prestiżową i malowniczą wizytą legitymizują reżim Jarosława Kaczyńskiego. Stają się jego wspólnikami. To smutne i rozczarowujące. Wstydźcie się, Kate i Williamie!

Kate and William aren’t playing nicely

British democracy is rock solid. The monarchical sentiments and courtly pomp that appeal to many of its citizens are no threat to it. The republican states of Europe and the world can only look on with envy at their charming “vintage” play. Poles would also love to have a fair princess and brave prince. But they don’t. They have to borrow them from abroad. For lack of their own, they fall in a swoon over the prince and princess of Cambridge. Harmless fun? Perhaps. But today, when the fundaments of democracy and rule of law in our country are being destroyed at a dramatic pace, this harmless fun becomes an appalling spectacle. In between the British royal couple’s opulent dinners in the company of notables from Kaczyński’s party, Poland’s Supreme Court will fall, and the tripartite division of powers will be definitively dead and buried. With the blessing of Great Britain? Bon appétit!

I do not know if Kate and William are politicians. In any case, they are diplomats serving their country. Aside from that, however, they are also free, adult human beings who are capable of deciding when and where they will travel, responsible for their own behavior. Did they know where they were going and what was going on in the country they were being sent to this time? Poland was most certainly written into their calendar long ago as a promotional tour intended to “warm” Great Britain’s image in light of the Brexit crisis. Still, Kate and William’s royal intellect should have given them pause to consider the political effects of their peregrination to Solidarity’s grave and the message it would send. I wonder if they are aware that the government that today is paying them homage deems Lech Wałęsa a “Russian agent”? Most probably they are – after all, their country does maintain an embassy in Warsaw and teams of political PR specialists.

The rules of diplomacy and a busy calendar are no excuse for such a grossly inappropriate visit. The situation in Poland is extraordinary, and it didn’t start yesterday. Such a prestigious gift for the anti-democratic regime in Warsaw offers proof that Poland, as a claimant to the family of Western democratic countries, needn’t be taken seriously. We are being treated like any other country outside of this family whose anti-democratic, authoritarian practices of governing are considered a fact of life. Well, Poland is “far away”, so no need to trouble oneself about it.

Why are you here? What are you trying to tell us? That leaving the EU is cool? Do you not know that the regime in Poland is cutting us off from Europe with a heavy axe, leading us to isolation and political estrangement? For you, Poland is just one of the many distant and unimportant countries they send you to. For us, it’s our homeland – one that only recently regained its freedom. And now, before our very eyes, that freedom is being trampled under the jackboots of reactionary populists and nationalists. With their colorful visit and the prestige it offers, the royal couple, together with the government of Great Britain, legitimize Jarosław Kaczyński’s regime. They are now his partners. This is sad and disappointing. Kate and William, shame on you!
